India's Apparel Manufacturing Hubs: Tiruppur, Surat, Jaipur and Beyond

Every Indian garment cluster has a speciality. Matching your product to the right hub is the first step to finding the right manufacturer, the right price and the right quality.

Short answerSource knitwear like t-shirts and hoodies from Tiruppur, synthetics, sarees and dress materials from Surat, block-printed ethnic wear from Jaipur, winterwear and hosiery from Ludhiana, fashion and private label from Delhi NCR, and woven and denim garments from Bengaluru and nearby clusters. Matching your product to its hub usually means better prices, faster sampling and more experienced factories.

India's apparel industry is not one market. It is a set of specialised clusters, each built over decades around particular fabrics, skills and buyers. A factory in Tiruppur that makes excellent cotton tees may be the wrong partner for a printed kurta, and a Jaipur unit known for hand block printing is not where you go for fleece hoodies.

Tiruppur: India's knitwear capital

If your brand sells t-shirts, polos, hoodies, sweatshirts or joggers, Tiruppur is usually the first stop. The cluster covers the full knit chain, from knitting and dyeing to printing, stitching and finishing, which makes it efficient for cotton basics.

  • Good for: 180 to 300 GSM cotton tees, French terry and fleece, kidswear, private label basics.
  • Keep in mind: many units are export-focused with higher MOQs. Pooled lots help small brands get in.

Read our Tiruppur buyer's guide for how the cluster works, or the guide to small-batch t-shirt manufacturing.

Surat: synthetics and ethnic fabrics

Surat is a major centre for synthetic and blended fabrics, and for sarees and dress materials. It suits brands working with polyester, viscose blends, georgette and crepe.

  • Good for: ethnic wear, sarees, dress materials, women's western wear in synthetic fabrics.
  • Keep in mind: fabric choice is huge, so be specific about composition and finish.

Jaipur: prints and hand-finished ethnic wear

Jaipur and nearby towns like Sanganer and Bagru are known for hand block printing, and for ethnic and fusion wear with handwork.

  • Good for: printed kurtas, co-ord sets, dresses, cotton ethnic wear.
  • Keep in mind: hand processes create natural variation and longer lead times. Build them into your launch plan.

Ludhiana: winterwear and woollens

Ludhiana is India's main hub for sweaters, woollen and acrylic knitwear, and hosiery.

  • Good for: sweaters, cardigans, knitted winterwear, thermal and hosiery products.
  • Keep in mind: demand is seasonal. Book production well before winter.

Delhi NCR: fashion and private label

Noida, Gurugram, Okhla and surrounding areas host many export houses and fashion manufacturers, with strong embroidery and embellishment skills.

  • Good for: women's fashion, private label, embroidered and embellished pieces, fusion wear.
  • Keep in mind: range is wide, so vet each unit for your specific category.

Bengaluru: wovens, denim and a growing brand scene

Bengaluru has long been a large garment manufacturing cluster, especially for woven garments. It is also home to a growing community of D2C fashion brands, and to Voz Cruda.

  • Good for: shirts, trousers, denim, contemporary casualwear.
  • Keep in mind: many large units are export-focused; smaller units serve domestic brands.

Kolkata and Mumbai

Kolkata has a large hosiery and innerwear industry and serves value-focused knitwear and kidswear. Mumbai combines fashion design, woven manufacturing and big wholesale markets, useful for women's wear and fast-moving fashion.

How to choose the right hub

  1. Start from the fabric. Knit cotton points to Tiruppur, synthetics to Surat, wool to Ludhiana, hand prints to Jaipur.
  2. Consider decoration. Embroidery-heavy designs often suit Delhi NCR; block prints suit Jaipur.
  3. Check your quantity. Export-focused units have higher MOQs. Domestic-focused units or pooled lots suit small runs.
  4. Vet the specific unit. A hub's reputation does not guarantee every factory. Use our supplier vetting checklist.
