Private label vs white label vs custom design
These three terms get mixed up. The difference is how much of the product you change.
| Model | What you change | Speed to launch | Brand uniqueness |
|---|---|---|---|
| White label | Only your label and packaging | Fastest | Low |
| Private label | Labels plus fabric, colour, print, fit tweaks | Fast | Medium to high |
| Full custom design | Everything, from pattern to fabric | Slowest | Highest |
Most successful small brands start with private label on a few hero products, then move into custom design once they know what their customers want.
Step 1: Pick your hero products
Choose two or three products your niche buys again and again. For most streetwear and casual brands that means heavyweight tees, hoodies, sweatshirts or joggers. For womenswear it could be co-ord sets, kurtas or shirts. Fewer products means lower MOQ pressure and a clearer brand.
Step 2: Decide what to customise
- Fabric and GSM: for example, 240 GSM cotton for a premium oversized tee.
- Fit: oversized, boxy, regular or cropped. Small changes to body length and sleeve make a big difference.
- Colour: your signature shades.
- Decoration: screen print, DTF print, puff print or embroidery.
- Branding: woven neck labels or printed neck labels, wash care labels, hang tags and packaging.
Step 3: Find the right private label manufacturer
Match the product to the region that specialises in it. Tiruppur leads in knitwear like tees and hoodies; Surat in synthetics and wovens; Jaipur in ethnic wear and prints; Delhi NCR in fashion and private label. Read our guide to India's apparel hubs for more.
When you speak to manufacturers, confirm:
- They make your exact product category regularly.
- MOQ per style and per colour, plus minimums for labels and tags.
- Sampling cost and time.
- Whether they can source your fabric or need you to supply it.
Use our checklist on how to vet apparel suppliers before you commit.
Step 4: Build your brand kit
Private label lives or dies on how branded it feels. Prepare:
- Logo files in vector format for labels and prints.
- Neck label design, with size and fibre content.
- Wash care label with fibre composition and care instructions.
- Hang tag and price tag design.
- Packaging: polybag, mailer box or tissue and sticker.
Check the labelling requirements that apply to your products and channels, such as fibre content, size, maker details and MRP for retail sales.
Step 5: Sample, then produce
Approve a pre-production sample with your exact fabric, print and labels. Compare it against your tech pack measurements. Only then confirm bulk production on a written purchase order with quantity, size split, price and delivery date.
Step 6: Launch and reorder
Shoot strong product photos, launch on Instagram and your own store, and track which sizes and colours sell. Reorder winners fast. Once a style regularly sells a few hundred units per run, you can move it from pooled lots to a direct factory order through Voz Cruda.

Frequently asked questions
What is private label clothing?
Private label clothing is made by a manufacturer but sold under your brand. You choose or adapt a proven product, then add your own labels, tags, packaging and often your own colours, prints or small design changes.
What is the difference between private label and white label?
White label means buying a ready-made product and simply adding your brand, with no changes to the product. Private label usually involves some customisation, such as fabric, colour, fit tweaks or prints, made exclusively for your brand.
What is the MOQ for private label clothing in India?
Many factories ask for 100 to 500 pieces per style for private label, plus minimums on custom woven labels and tags. Pooled lots on Smallotz let you start with smaller quantities by sharing the base product with other brands.
Do I need my own designs for private label?
No. You can start from a manufacturer's existing product and customise it. Many brands begin this way and move to fully custom designs once they understand their customers.
Which private label products are easiest to start with?
Basics with steady demand, such as t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, joggers and shirts, are the easiest. Their production is well established and they are simple to brand with prints, embroidery and labels.
