Hoodies sell at higher prices than tees and carry your brand's look in a big way. They also have more moving parts: fabric, rib, hood construction, drawcords, pockets and fit. Getting those right on a small first order is what this guide is about.
Fleece or French terry?
| Fabric | Inside feel | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brushed fleece | Soft, fluffy, warm | Winter collections, heavyweight streetwear | Too warm for much of India outside winter |
| French terry (loop knit) | Small loops, smooth | Year-round hoodies, sweatshirts, joggers | Less warm, slightly less plush |
| Cotton-polyester blend | Varies | Merch, team wear, value lines | Less shrinkage, less premium feel |
Many Indian brands use French terry for most of the year and fleece for a winter drop. Read more in our fabric guide for clothing brands.
Choosing the GSM
- 240 to 280 GSM: light sweatshirts and summer hoodies.
- 280 to 320 GSM: everyday hoodies with a solid feel.
- 350 to 450 GSM: heavyweight streetwear hoodies that hold their shape.
Heavier fabric costs more and takes longer to dry and finish, so ask for the exact GSM in your quote and check it on the sample.
Fit and construction details
- Fit: regular, oversized with dropped shoulders, or boxy and cropped.
- Hood: two-panel or three-panel; single or double layer. A double-layer hood holds shape better.
- Rib: cuffs and hem in matching rib, usually 2x2 or 1x1. Ask for rib in the same colour and dye lot.
- Drawcords: flat or round, with metal eyelets or stitched holes, or none for a cleaner look.
- Pocket: kangaroo pocket, side-seam pockets or none.
- Finishing: pre-shrunk or garment-washed fabric reduces shrinkage after the first wash.
Decoration
Screen printing, puff print and embroidery are the most popular on hoodies. Embroidery suits small chest logos; large back prints work well in screen or DTF. See screen printing vs DTF vs DTG to choose.
Typical MOQs and what drives them
Hoodie MOQs are often higher than for simple knits because fleece and its matching rib are bought and dyed together in minimum lots. Custom colours add another minimum. Expect factory MOQs of around 200 to 500 pieces per style, and higher if each colour has its own minimum.
How to order a small batch of hoodies

- Join or start a pooled hoodie lot on Smallotz, or request a direct quote for 300+ pieces per style.
- Approve a sample: check GSM, measurements, rib match, hood shape and print.
- Wash-test the sample for shrinkage and pilling.

Frequently asked questions
What is the MOQ for custom hoodies in India?
Many factories ask for 200 to 500 pieces per style for custom hoodies, mainly because fleece fabric and matching rib are bought in minimum lots. Pooled lots on Smallotz let small brands order fewer pieces at close to bulk pricing.
What GSM is good for a hoodie?
Everyday hoodies are often 280 to 320 GSM. Heavyweight streetwear hoodies commonly use 350 to 450 GSM fleece or French terry for a thick, structured feel.
What is the difference between fleece and French terry?
Both are knitted with a smooth face. Fleece is brushed on the inside for a soft, warm, fluffy feel. French terry keeps small loops on the inside, so it is lighter and more breathable, which suits warmer climates.
Where are hoodies made in India?
Tiruppur is the main hub for cotton fleece and French terry hoodies. Ludhiana also produces winterwear and sweatshirts, especially in heavier and blended fabrics.
Are hoodies a good product for an Indian clothing brand?
Yes, but demand is seasonal in much of India. Many brands pair heavyweight winter hoodies with lighter French terry versions that sell for more of the year.
